September 24, 1988 became the most important day of Ben Johnson's career. The Canadian athlete achieved Olympic gold at the Seoul Olympics in the 100 meter dash category, beating the world record with a time of 9.79 seconds. That time smashed the previous record, which was 9.83 seconds.
Three days later, his triumph was annulled by doping and he was left in the hands of his greatest rival, American athletic legend Carl Lewis. In addition, Lewis's mark was the fastest of the entire year in the 100-meter dash.
It was named as “the dirtiest race” in athletics history.
